'WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN .... '

Who are we? Are we a top of the table team (10 games unbeaten at the start of the season) or are we a bottom of the table team (defeats against AFC Links and a draw against the Strollers). Well add the two together and that makes us a mid table team.

Our season seemed to fall apart after our 1st defeat against Carshalton Village, not so much because of the result but more because our 3 workmanlike central midfielder's with an engine on’em all got, or aggravated their serious injuries. Daniel Mitchell out for the season with knee ligament damage, Adrian with his ongoing Achilles problem, and myself the ongoing shoulder problem. That’s when we struggled without some steel in the middle, Matty, Ed, and Gary L all tried but they possess so much in other positions, but maybe not the required commitment and engine needed (all three have gone on to play well in other areas).

Our defence has looked very good especially as individuals, of which Rob M is of course favourite to win player of the season (bastard – not that winning matters), Pete, Garry H, and Dan L have all put in some great tackles over the season. I’ve been most impressed with Colin who recently has taken up the mantle of midfield engine with some cracking displays. Matty has developed well as a forward over the past few weeks taking his tally to 7. Ed ought to get a mention as Manager for taking to the job with enthusiasm keep going mate and for giving Matty a chance up front - it has worked out well. The return of the big man in the GK jumper has been positive, he’s done v well, still love you Geoff – we miss your banter in the changing rooms wish you could both play.

On a personal note, I’ve had a frustrating season having played with injuries since league game 1 (now taking a break) and having coached some fitness into our lads, only to see that whittle away along with the results. I truly believe it could have been a trophy season, if we had continued with some mid season training, something we need to look at for next year.

We have a great team unity and spirit and it’s a pleasure to be there on Sunday mornings just for the laughs. Whether it be Wayne's ability to be so with it, Dave's endless McDonalds stories, Ed’s inspiring team talks, Matty's cheeky smile (I’m not a pedophile, honest) Dan Lawless’s warmth towards the officials or just a nice beer afterwards in the Leather Bottle, thanks chaps.
