29 June 2003 - Tooting & Mitcham 6-a-side competition
Well, we didn't walk away with the cup, or even the losers cup, but left with red faces instead. Why ? Because some of us got sun burnt ..... and we didn't do to well! In our group of 4, we scrapped for a draw in our opening game v. Joe Public. To be fair we were generally second best, but did enough and thanks to Springy's equaliser, we kept on track for what we believed was a possible qualifying position (2nd place), although only the top side went through to the main competition. We then got completely outclassed against the competition winners from May - Sands End. You can't help but think that we gave them too much respect and didn't show any belief that we could win the game, although we started solidly, marking very well, although went to pieces as soon as they scored a couple. We then then put in a decent performance against Stella and won 3-0. A surprising victory, as we had struggled in our opening 2 games. We then beat the same team again in the losers competition, in a penalty shoot-out (straight sudden death), after twice going behind. The main game finished 2-2. We then got beat twice in the final round-robin stage. The first game saw us play Joe Public again, but we couldn't stop the onslaught and eventually bowed over, losing 3-0. Our tie with the Madrid boys was disappointing to say the least. No one wanted to play, or at least it seemed that way, they scored within 30 seconds of kicking off. We did however restore some pride, scoring a late consolation.
