26 August 2002 - Old Wimbledonians 5-a-side competition

After 2 good performances in previous 5-a-side competitions, we tried our luck again, this time in the Old Wimbledonians competition, but were still unable to find that winning formula.

Action from Old Wimbledonians III's - our last game. Left: James 'Cole' lines up a shot while Fergie looks on. Right: Mattie threads a ball through to Ed.

Results from the group matches:

SCORE OPPONENTS MATCH REPORT SUMMARY
0-0 Farmers Unable to capitalize on chances created and were nearly caught out when the Farmers broke free in the second half.
2-2 Old Wimbledonians I Probably our best performance overall, everyone worked hard for each other, knowing this would be a tough game, we nearly nicked a 2-1 win, but the Wombles equalised right at the end.
0-2 French Embassy II Another good performance, although we never quite matched probably one of the best teams in the tournament, we needed to win this one, to have any hope in qualifying for the main competition.

Results from group matches in the Plaque competition:

SCORE OPPONENTS MATCH REPORT SUMMARY
0-2 Red & Blues * Probably one of the worst performances ever in recent times in a 5-a-side game, we all looked like we had just woken up from hibernation (all we had was a lunch break!)
1-0 Red & Blacks * We had to put the last performance well and truly behind us and this 1-0 win was a much improved solid performance.
1-0 White's * After the shambles in the first game, we realistically new that if we were to have any hope of qualifying we had to win all 3 of our remaining games. This was the second of three required wins, another solid performance.
0-1 Old Wimbledonians III One of the worst things you can do is play for a draw. A lot of players calculated that a draw would be enough. A risky thing to play for, we generally dominated, but were caught napping as the Wombles III's scored from the break and sent us home.

* Team name not known

Squad: Jel, Richie, Ed, John, Mattie, Glen F, James and Adrian
