20 October 2002 - Edgar Hemingway Junior Cup 1st Round v. Merton Manor (at Dundonald Road Rec.)

DCFC 0 (0)
Merton Manor 5 (1)

This cup competition has never been kind to us. Before today, we had only ever scored once and have always gone out in round one. Unfortunately that miserable record remained, after Merton Manor eased through to round two.

If there's one thing that's got to improve, it's our finishing. We had the first real chances as Kirk was unable to beat the keeper on two occasions, both efforts were hit half-heartily straight at the keeper. Then one of Manor's first real chances was put away after sloppy defending resulted in Manor winning a corner, Ed did well to keep a header out with a clearance on the line, but as the ball flew up high in the air, we didn't defend it well and Manor took full advantage.

Ed created the best chances, even though he was playing at left back. He thrives on long range efforts and on another day he might have been rewarded, as the opposing keeper, kept out 2 good efforts.

For the remainder of the first half we continued to play well, but again didn't put Manor under enough pressure.

The game was more or less killed off when Manor scored their second early on in the second half. Our heads more or less dropped, but we still played some nice passing football and could easily have got back into it, but poor old Kirk missed a virtual open goal, blasting over the bar, it wasn't his day! Matty and Glenn M created further chances, but it wasn't to be, as Merton Manor killed the game off with 3 more to add to the misery.
