OH, IT'S GOAL'S YOU WANT IS IT ?

What do they call this again? You know, when we score more goals than the other team? Oh yes, a win. Well it took a while but finally we are back to winning ways. This week’s league game saw us travel approximately five minutes down the road, half by foot, half by car. Guess who arrived at the ground first?

We started the game with a blizzard of attacks looking dangerous for a good twenty minutes before gaining any reward. Just as we were starting to worry that this was going to be another 0-0 Richie fired home after some defensive ping pong. Just minutes later he got a second after neatly nodding the ball in the back of the net after a pin point cross from Leroy who was proving a revolution on the left wing. Then a couple of minutes later Colin chipped in with his first goal for Dundonald after a corner saw the ball fall to him. Then came another goal when I stunningly put the ball in an open net after some help from the defender and his put upon keeper. That’s right four goals, are you keeping up?

4-0 up and still in the first half, could this be a 10-0 nil drubbing by us? Don’t be silly. Right before half time Old Wimbledonians were literally handed a goal after everyone but the ref saw an obvious handball by their forward result in a goal. Our appeal fell on deaf ears, it didn’t matter really though we all thought, we’re winning 4-1.

The half time break saw us stress to each other the importance not to concede a quick goal. Unfortunately we didn’t concede a quick goal, we conceded two. The first, clocked in at 45 minutes 20 seconds saw Pete, well pass the ball to their striker who scored. The second (46 minutes 5 seconds) saw their player score the goal of his life as he rifled, from an acute angle, into the very top corner of the goal. Bad luck Pete and Rob the copper keeper. Oh dear we must have all thought, we’ve got a game on our hands now. At least Tony was having fun on the sidelines.

What happened next was probably the most pleasing thing all morning. We stuck at it and dug deep showing real quality all over the pitch. We still looked dangerous and didn’t look like conceding any more goals. On the 70th minute we got what we deserved, another goal. Ed pumped a free kick forward which floated over everyone but Gary L who coolly finished with his left foot. Remarkably Ed had a hand in four of our five goals (he says).

The remainder of the game turned a bit niggly with a couple of our players picking up bookings and their players seeming intent on chopping our legs rather than get the ball. We knew it was our day when Dan L took down one of their players in the box and the ref waved play on. Wow, that doesn’t happen every week.

And so we were victorious. Lets hope this is a return to form rather than a blip on our excellent losing record.
