Someone might have once said “you truly appreciate life after you’ve lost 9-0”. I believe this is what happened to us after the Carshalton Village game, we went home into the bosom of our families and looked at all that was wonderful in the world; Pub Quizzes, Pool Tournaments, being above Arsenal in the league. We were able to put the result of that terrible dark day behind us.

I only say this because on Sunday morning at Dundonald Rec there were no signs of the team who humiliated themselves the week before. Okay so we might have got off to a rubbish start what with young Gary repaying uncle Ed’s faith in his centre back role with a precision volley that found the back of his own net, but from here on we were a different team.

It didn’t take long for us to equalise springing an impressive counter attack that saw a wonderful ball from Ed knocked in by Leroy on the volley. It was a deserved goal since we’d been plugging away since conceding. For the remainder of the half we defended excellently, particularly our two men in the middle, Rob and Gary (who recovered superbly from his og). As the ref blew the whistle to end the first half we knew that we could do even better than our brave performance in the first half. Things didn’t look good though as Rob the keeper copper was injured and had to be replaced by Ed in goal.

As it turned out this didn’t matter because we defended so well barely giving Old Merton a sniff at our now handicapped goal. We were on the ropes for the first 20 minutes defending for our lives but then the magic happened. Little Geoff came on and with virtually his first touch somehow managed to turn the ball into the net from an Adrian corner. I don’t know how much Geoff knew about the goal seeing as the ball hit the post, then what looked like his face but they all count.

This prompted Old Merton to come at us full tilt. So another chunk of the game was spent with us defending frantically, yet admirably. As the game went on we started dominating more of the pitch as Old Merton got tired. It was here that young Gary got himself a late brace after being put up front to make way for Pete at the back. Both goals were excellently finished; the first an open goal but with players breathing down his neck, the second rounding the keeper and slotting the ball home.

4-1 and the game was well and truly over. Every single player should be proud of their performance. Let’s hope it’s this team that turns up next week and not our 9-0 selves.
